The Sandbox is an NFT-based virtual world where players can build, own, and monetize their gaming experiences on the Ethereum blockchain. The game allows developers, content creators, and artists to own NFTs, explore a vast metaverse, play in different games and experiences. The Sandbox is an open-ended game that comes with endless possibilities, similar to Minecraft.

The Sandbox

Overview[edit]

The Sandbox blockchain gaming platform consists of three integrated products that together provide a comprehensive experience for user-generated content (UGC) production - VoxEdit, Marketplace, and Game Maker. The combined products further benefit users by allowing them to secure copyright ownership for their user-created content through blockchain and smart contracts.

  • VoxEdit

VoxEdit is a free 3D voxel modeling and NFT creation package for PC/Mac that allows users to create and animate 3D objects such as humans, animals, vehicles, foliage, tools, and items. Voxels, which are square 3D pixels similar to building blocks, can be manipulated using VoxEdit to quickly create beautiful creations. Once built, objects can be exported from VoxEdit into The Sandbox marketplace to become NFT games ASSETS.

  • Marketplace

The Sandbox has an NFT marketplace that allows users to upload, publish, and sell their NFT creations made with VoxEdit. Creations are first uploaded into an IPFS network to provide decentralized storage and then registered onto the blockchain to prove ownership. Once this is accomplished, creations become ASSETS that can be sold by making a sale offer on the marketplace where potential buyers can then purchase them.

  • Game Maker

The Sandbox Game Maker allows users to build 3D games for free. Due to accessible visual scripting tools to create 3D games no coding is required. Creators can contribute to a vast metaverse, filled with a wide range of amazing interactive creations and experiences.

Development history[edit]

The original Sandbox game was launched in May 2012. In 2018 It was rebranded to be a play-to-earn crypto game that utilized blockchain components. Before 2018, The Sandbox was best known for its two smash mobile hits The Sandbox (2011) and The Sandbox Evolution (2016), which combined generated 40 million downloads across iOS and Android. In 2018, developer/Publisher Pixowl decided to bring this successful User Generated Content gaming IP and a large community of creators from mobile to the blockchain ecosystem. The goal was to disrupt existing game makers like Minecraft and Roblox by providing creators with true ownership of their creations as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and to reward them for their participation in the ecosystem.

The Sandbox’s Components[edit]

The Sandbox uses several token types to ensure a circular economy between all the types of users who will interact with the platform: players, creators, curators, and landowners.

  • Assets

Assets are standard tokens created by players who assemble user-generated content. Assets serve as creation elements in the Sandbox Game Maker and they can be traded on the Sandbox Marketplace. Assets are NFTs that are indivisible, unique, and not interchangeable.

  • LAND

LAND is a digital piece of real estate in The Sandbox metaverse. Players buy LAND in order to populate it with games, assets, and interactive experiences. Each LAND is a unique (non-fungible) token lying on the public Ethereum blockchain (ERC-721). There is a variety of things you can do with LAND in The Sandbox metaverse: host contests and events for your brand, stake SAND to earn more token coins to spend in the game, monetize your assets and make money from others in exchange for access, vote in the Sandbox’s governance system, play games and experiences that others have created.

  • SAND

SAND is the native coin or currency of the Sandbox metaverse. It is an ERC20 token built on the Ethereum blockchain and has a finite supply of 3,000,000,000 tokens in circulation. Gamers can use SAND to exchange or trade NFTs in the Sandbox Marketplace for real-world money.

SAND is also used to develop and manage the game’s metaverse, purchase lands, customize avatar designs, and buy in-game resources. Additionally, SAND is required to build and monetize your own NFTs and hire game designers and artists.

Ways to earn[edit]

There are several different ways to earn real-world money in The Sandbox crypto game. One can purchase a LAND, develop the LAND, and rent virtual properties to other players to earn a commission. Once you rent your land, the renter can build a unique experience on top of it. Users can also monetize their skills and gaming experiences to earn real-world money.

Players can also charge a fee in order for other players to play the experience located on their land. You can charge a small fee of SAND in order to play your game. Additionally, players can create and sell Voxel assets, created with VoxEdit, on the Marketplace.

Partnerships[edit]

The Sandbox team has secured more than 50 partnerships to develop content on the platform, including brands like Shaun the Sheep, Dapp game studios like Dapper Labs (CryptoKitties), investors such as Square Enix (Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider), and iconic game companies like ATARI (Rollercoaster Tycoon, Pong). These partners secured their own virtual real estate in The Sandbox metaverse.

The team intends to leverage the partnership with reputable brands such as Adidas and Bored Ape Yacht Club to reach 100 million users over the next 10 years. For instance, the partnership with ATARI involves building games using their intellectual property like PONG, Rollercoaster Tycoon, and other licenses.
